Abstract

Degree Program Capstones: Applicability and Effectiveness

For many years, educational institutions have been using a Capstone experience as a means of documenting student performance and assessing degree programs. With the transition to outcomes based approaches to student performance and assessment, Capstone experiences have evolved from the traditional thesis/research paper to include the application of comprehensive projects, cooperative education, internships, study abroad, portfolios, and hands-on demonstrations. A comprehensive literature review will explore the challenges faced by students as they complete their Capstone experience.

Research will also examine the overall value of the Capstone to the student. A survey of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide graduates over the last three years will inquire how alumni have regarded their Capstone experience and the value of their Capstone as they have transitioned and progressed in their chosen professions.

Results of the study will be presented as the strengths and challenges of the various Capstone experiences and the overall value to the student.
