Abstract

Effective Development of Clinical Reasoning, Communication, and Nursing Tasks

Nursing educators are using simulation-based-training (SBT) to develop a variety of skills in nursing students which include clinical reasoning, effective communication, and proper application of general nursing tasks. To foster these skills effective simulation environments are needed. Oser, Cannon-Bowers, Salas, & Dwyer (1999) advocated that SBT includes: Task lists/Learning objectives, Scenario Events, Performance Measures, Performance Diagnosis, Feedback and Debrief, and Skill Inventory. A literature review was done on selected nursing studies using simulation for training. One piece of literature examined was the Debriefing for Meaningful Learning Method as developed by Kristina Dreifuerst (2012). This article utilized simulators and proper debriefing techniques to create an efficient training scenario. Therefore, the SBT framework is an effective training tool when coupled with proper use of simulations and debriefings.
