The aviation industry continues to grow as many show their passion and many more continue to pursue their dreams in aviation. Simultaneously, the space industry, specifically the commercial sector, shows limitless possibilities as increasing numbers of adventurists pursue personal interests. However, there is a gap in knowledge about regulations and maintenance practices that shepherd the fast-growing and innovative space industry. While more people may be familiar with current aviation regulations and maintenance practices, little is known about the regulations and maintenance requirements that govern reusable commercial spacecraft, particularly those that involve ferrying space tourists. This on-going research effort is focused on reusable air/spacecraft that best mimic fixed-wing designs, such as Virgin Galactic’s WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo. Through literature reviews and interviews of subject matter experts, relevant aviation and commercial space regulations, as well as spacecraft design and maintenance activities, are compared. The results of this effort will lead to an exploratory understanding of the maintenance requirements and procedures anticipated for carrier aircraft and reusable air launch/horizontal landing spacecraft.
