ECU/PDU Session #5

Earned Value Management: Identifying Hidden Project Performance Issues

Description

Used properly, earned value analysis (EVA) is a powerful management tool. After a brief review of EVA basics, we will apply EVA to mini-case studies and then introduce advanced application techniques to uncover hidden project performance issues much earlier in the project lifecycle.

When EVA is used only at the whole project level, it can provide false indicators of project performance and thereby delay problem identification and correction. However, by examining the CPI at the performance unit level, EVA can uncover hidden project performance issues early enough (by 20% completion) to mitigate impact to the project.
