Biography

Dr Ong Eng Hong is director of academics, Singapore University of Technology and Design Academy (SUTD Academy), as well as director of Office of Education, Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). He obtained his B.Eng (Hons) and PhD in mechanical engineering from the National University of Singapore.

Eng Hong has rich experiences in management, strategic planning, R&D and tertiary teaching. Prior to joining SUTD in 2013, he was a division manager and a senior scientist with Data Storage Institute (DSI), a national research laboratory under the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore. He led and managed an R&D division with a staff strength of about 50 and half of whom were PhD holders. He was responsible for charting R&D roadmap and leading high value add R&D projects with renowned overseas universities, research organizations and multinational companies. Besides, he was the programme manager of a 3-year A*STAR thematic and strategic research programme, The Integrative Approach for 10 Tb/in2 Magnetic Recording Research Programme. The programme came with a total R&D fund of SGD 10 million and there were 12 principal investigators from local universities and research institutes working under the programme. He was also the chair of the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) ISPS (Information Storage and Processing Systems) division for 2013-2014. The ISPS division is based in the US and he remains to be the only Singaporean to have headed the division to date. Together with his adjunct associate professorship with the Mechanical Engineering Department of the National University of Singapore before joining SUTD, all in all, he has more than 20 years of experience in R&D and education.

As director of academics, SUTD Academy, he is leading the continuous education and training initiative to help working professionals up-skill or re-skill themselves to stay relevant in the fast evolving job market brought about by breakthroughs in the scientific and engineering world. As director of office of education, SUTD, he is currently playing a key role in the smart campus initiative, exploring how to take technology-enabled learning to the next level of excellence with state-of-the-art technologies in virtual reality, artificial intelligence, internet of things, etc.
