Short Description

Communicating with online and distance students about library support available to them has often been a challenge for academic libraries. Many libraries offer a basic webpage (often a LibGuide) providing links to the library resources and services most relevant to online/distance students, yet critical information is often left out. Based on both a content analysis of the websites of all ARL member libraries and an examination of the ACRL Standards for Distance Learning Library Services, this poster will provide a set of best practices for creating library support guides for online/distance students.

Long Description

Communicating with online and distance students about library support available to them has often been a challenge for academic libraries. Many libraries offer a basic webpage (often a LibGuide) providing links to the library resources and services most relevant to online/distance students, such as the guide that we’ve developed at Syracuse University Libraries (https://researchguides.library.syr.edu/onlinestudents). Critical information and resources, however, are often omitted from these guides. Based on both a content analysis of the websites of all ARL member libraries and an examination of the ACRL Standards for Distance Learning Library Services, this poster will provide a set of best practices for creating library support guides for online/distance students. One limitation of the content analysis is that some libraries might embed their guides or additional resources in platforms such as their institutions’ learning management systems, which are beyond the scope of this poster.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the importance of having a landing page or support guide for online/distance students
  • Understand how the ACRL Standards for Distance Learning Library Services can improve outreach to online/distance students, including the support guide
  • Learn best practices for creating a library resource page for online/distance students
