Great Lakes Airlines was founded by two ex-Pan American pilots Irving E. Herman and Maxwell Stell. They operated out of New York from 1946 until 1962, it began as scheduled intrastate service between Buffalo, Rochester, and New York. It later offered low fare infrequent service coast to coast and to Florida. They operated with C-46, DC-3, DC-4, DC-6 and L-749.
