Abstract
Steam distillation was used to extract (R)- Linalool, Linalyl acetate, and Camphor from lavender during the steam distillation experiment. The compounds were extracted via a steam distillation apparatus. A 250 mL two-neck round-bottom flask, a thermometer adapter, 25 mL a thermometer, a condenser, a distillation head, a vacuum adapter, lab jacks, and clamps made up the apparatus. Then the lavender was massed out and added to a beaker with 100 mL of water. Over time, the distillate is collected in a vial to be analyzed. (R)- Linalool is a nonaromatic alcohol containing two alkenes with the chemical formula C_10 H_18 O. Linalyl acetate is a nonaromatic ester compound with two alkenes. The molecular formula is C_12 H_20 O_2 , and the molecular weight is 192.29 g/mol. Camphor is a nonaromatic cyclic ketone with molecular formula C_10 H_16 O. (R)-Linalool is a major component in the gas chromatography (GC) spectrum as shown on the peak at 5.347 minutes. The mass spectroscopy (MS) shows the molecular weight of 154.25 g/mol as the tiny M+ peak and the major peak at 136.2 g/mol which demonstrates the loss of the alcohol group. Linalyl acetate is shown as a major peak on the GC at 5.965 minutes. The MS shows a base peak at 93.2 g/mol which represents the loss of C_7 H_9, a major component in the compound. Camphor is another major component in GC, with a peak at 5.611 minutes. The MS shows the molecular mass of the compound of 152.24g/mol for the M+ peak. The steam distillation produced 0.096 grams of product, containing the three compounds. Linalool is known for its floral scent, which can be placed into fragrances and cosmetics (All about Linalool: Lavender’s All-Natural Aromatic, Antimicrobial Pow, 2025). Linalyl acetate is a fragrance note in soaps and detergents, but also used for gut health (Kyoung Shin & Hee Seol, 2023). Camphor is a colorless, waxy substance known for its strong scent, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties (Camphor, n.d.).
