Abstract
In the event of an emergency where evacuation of the aircraft is necessary, passengers have 90 seconds to locate their nearest exit and egress as safely and quickly as possible. However, news outlets have reported multiple occurrences of passengers evacuating and taking their belongings with them during this decade. The root of this hazard occurs in multiple areas of flight, particularly during safety briefings and during emergency evacuations. The purpose of this project is to focus on improving passenger knowledge of safety features such as exit door locations through digital mediums and strengthen deliverance of life-saving information. The project shares an administrative solution to close the safety gap, by utilizing airline mobile apps and in-flight entertainment systems to deliver safety information. The goal of the proposed solution is to work alongside the FAA study specified in the 2024 Emergency Vacating Aircraft Cabin Act to improve safety. The solution was developed first through a literature review of existing industry solutions, aircraft accident reports involving passenger survivability, and regulations to identify potential safety gaps in policy, risk management, assurance, and promotion. Next, a Project Specification Outline was developed to narrow down the topic to the proposed solution. Finally, a Preliminary Hazard Analysis and Risk Matrix were developed alongside a Financial and Cost Analysis to demonstrate how the project will have a positive return on investment while reducing risk simultaneously. Through the PHA, there is a clear reduction in levels of risk by enhancing existing safety tools and bringing them into the modern digital era. The FCA highlights a positive 0.53% ROI between current and future state costs, demonstrating viability of the proposed solution. It is beneficial to both airlines and lawmakers because of its strength through Safety Risk Management to protect lives.
