Abstract

The study of 3D Printing in Construction: Technology and Digital Innovation examines the growing role of additive manufacturing in transforming traditional construction practices. This literature review explores the evolution of construction 3D printing from early conceptual research on contour crafting to modern automated construction systems that integrate robotics with digital design technologies such as Building Information Modeling. The review highlights practical applications including the design and testing of a 3D printed concrete pedestrian bridge and the increasing use of 3D concrete printing in residential construction to reduce labor demands and project timelines. It also discusses advancements in printable materials, including synthetic ceramics and improved cementitious mixtures that enhance structural performance and material efficiency. In addition, the review considers emerging research on large-scale 3D printing for space infrastructure, including NASA-led studies investigating the use of autonomous systems and extraterrestrial materials to construct lunar and Martian habitats. Although findings demonstrate that additive construction can improve safety, reduce waste, and enable complex architectural forms, widespread adoption remains limited by regulatory barriers, economic uncertainty, and the need for long-term durability testing. Continued research, standardization, and industry adaptation are essential for broader implementation.
