Proceedings of the 12th GEIA Seminar

In 2025, for the first time, the GEIA Seminar was hosted by DECEA - the Brazilian Department of Airspace Control - in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro. The 12th in-person edition provided enriching opportunities to exchange insights, experiences, and research findings on a variety of themes, including Aeronautical English (AE) teaching, learning and assessment; aviation language description and analysis; course design and new technologies; the role of motivation in professional settings; and the impact of language as a human factor in aviation.

Our keynote speaker, Elizabeth Mathews from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, opened the event with an important reminder: language is more than just a medium - it is a human factor with direct implications for aviation safety. The 12th GEIA Seminar also featured nine oral presentations on a variety of topics and five hands-on workshops tailored to the specific needs and professional development of Brazilian Air Force AE instructors.

Throughout the event, speakers from around the world - Hong Kong, Brazil, the United States, Chile, England, and Peru - invited us to reflect on how technology can enrich, rather than override, the irreplaceable value of human knowledge, including language awareness, motivational aspects, and interpersonal communication. The closing lecture, delivered by Valeria Silva de Oliveira, focused on the development of instructional materials and tools for teaching English for Specific Purposes. Once again, this in-person edition of the Seminar highlighted the importance of the research and events conducted by GEIA members and participants, fostering dialogue on innovation, training, testing, and material development in Aviation English.

As a follow-up to the event, selected workshops and presentations are featured in these proceedings. They include three summaries, three case studies, and four full papers, covering a wide range of themes and presenting diverse findings. The authors’ contributions have greatly enriched this publication. Our sincere thanks to the reviewers for their thorough and valuable work.

Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to Zenodo and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for hosting this online publication and helping disseminate GEIA’s outcomes worldwide.
