Abstract
This undergraduate research team will highlight the perspective of two AFROTC cadets who have experienced different leadership styles from various leaders across our career here at Embry - Riddle Aeronautical University. This team will explore the difference between selfish “Check-the-box” leaders who are intrinsically motivated by mere self-promotion versus selfless leaders who are truly leading with the best interests of their followers in mind. This first type of selfish leaders, who leave the needs of their people behind, are in striking contrast to the selfless leaders who do not concern themselves with promotions but choose simply to be present for their people. This research group will also explore the effects each type of leader can have on an organization and the negative outcomes that toxic selfish leadership evokes from their followers. Lastly, the group will provide actionable ideas and solutions on how leaders can avoid becoming this type of toxic leader.
