Abstract
Artificial intelligence is evolving into a more prominent part of people’s lives. The advent of generative AI systems such as ChatGPT has popularized the use of AI as a tool to answer queries, solve problems, and work collaboratively with humans. Since AI is becoming widely used and many businesses seek to integrate the technology into their products and services, understanding how humans develop and maintain trust in AI systems is important. Many AI systems produce a variety of “signals,” ranging from auditory to visual to motion signals, but there currently exists little research into how those signals affect human-robot trust. Therefore, the question that we seek to answer in our investigation is: How does the combination of auditory, visual, and motion signals produced by an AI system influence the self-reported feelings of trust between human participants and that AI system? We expect that any signal will be better than no signal for generating feelings of trust, but we also expect that certain signals or combinations of signals will generate significantly more trust in most people compared to others.
