Abstract

Arizona Hyperloop, formerly AZLoop, is a coalition between Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Arizona State University students competing in Elon Musk’s annual SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition.

Hyperloop is the proposed “Fifth Mode of Transportation” - coined “a cross between a Concorde, a rail gun, and an air hockey table.” A hyperloop pod levitates magnetically, and travels at nearly the speed of sound inside a vacuum tube, which eliminates air resistance.

Musk hosts the annual competition to university students to encourage society to evolve urban transportation. The goal is to design, build, and race the fastest prototype pod at SpaceX’s mile-long test track in Hawthorne, CA.

Arizona Hyperloop has been involved with the project for over four years and was one of 20 teams selected to compete for three years in a row. During competition week, only the first three teams to complete SpaceX’s rigorous tests on the spot are invited to race their pod in the vacuum tube. The team is confident that this year, they can impress SpaceX enough to be placed in the tube with a safe multi-motor design and regenerative braking, a system which no team has done before. Magnetic levitation is also currently being researched as a feasible design, which no team has successfully implemented to date. The team demonstrated an aptitude for leadership and teamwork despite working across the state with tight deadlines. Arizona Hyperloop is excited to be a pioneer in the future of transportation.
