Presentation Description/Abstract
This presentation explores the transition from leaded 100 low lead (100LL) aviation gasoline to unleaded alternatives in general aviation (GA) piston-engine aircraft, motivated by environmental and public health risks underscored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2023 endangerment finding on lead emissions. Drawing on a comprehensive literature review and synthesis of sources, the study identifies and evaluates key unleaded fuel candidates: Auto Gas (Mogas), Swift UL94, GAMI G100UL, Swift 100R, and LyondellBasell/VP Racing UL100E. Each is assessed for regulatory status, engine compatibility, advantages, and challenges. The analysis also examines regulatory frameworks, such as the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions (EAGLE) initiative targeting lead-free operations by 2030, alongside technical, economic, liability, and logistical hurdles. Findings highlight GAMI G100UL and Swift 100R as leading drop-in replacements fuel candidates, with LyondellBasell/VP Racing UL100E emerging as a contender under the FAA's Piston Aviation Fuels Initiative (PAFI). However, to make the transition to unleaded fuel feasible, the GA community in the US will need enhanced industry collaboration to overcome barriers, ensuring safe and viable GA operations amid projected piston-engine demand through 2043.
