Abstract/Description

One of the key components of Embry-Riddle's Writing Matters quality enhancement plan (QEP) is to prepare faculty across the disciplines to teach writing in their classrooms. While it might seem daunting to teach writing principles to students, there is, in fact, no one better to show students how to adhere to disciplinary conventions in writing than the very faculty who participate in the creation of scholarship and/or professional documents that adhere to those disciplinary conventions.

One important step in writing instruction is taking stock of your own beliefs about writing and learning to recognize some common myths about writing. It is important to become familiar with common myths about writing so that you can ensure that writing assignments (and rubrics) and associated instructions avoid perpetuating these common myths. In addition to familiarizing you with common myths about writing, this workshop will also help you to consider what "good" writing means within disciplinary contexts, adopt strategies for teaching students these disciplinary characteristics of writing, and begin to revise/create writing assignments within the disciplines that avoid perpetuating writing myths.
