Abstract

This year was the 18th North American Airport Wildlife Management Convention (NAAWMC), held in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. The NAAWMC is an annual convention that brings aviation professionals, vendors, and researchers together to discuss various wildlife mitigation strategies for airport operations. Members from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Dr. Flavio Antonio Coimbra Mendonca (Faculty), Janelle Drennan (Undergraduate) and Joseph Cabrera (Graduate) – presented their ongoing research regarding Unmanned Aircraft Systems for Wildlife Hazard Assessment During Nightfall. By attending the conference, the team was able to receive direct feedback from airport wildlife biologists and airport operators, network at social events and develop potential partnerships to expand the study. The conference was also a means to gain confidence in public speaking and instill pride in presenting research that could enhance the methods used by airport wildlife biologists to collect data in the future.
