Tap 'N Go
Lead Student Name
Shlok Misra
Executive Summary
Problem: Tap ‘n Go aims to combat the fear among students to travel across campus, especially late in the night or early in the morning before sunrise. The university has already taken an initial step to combat this fear: Campus Safety oversees Night Flight, which provides free shuttles to students across campus from 7PM to midnight. However, students often have to get across campus during times when Night Flight is unavailable. Students often can be hesitant to use the services of Night Flight as they are hesitant to call campus safety for a shuttle and shuttles can often take a lot of time to arrive. Tap ‘n Go will help to combat the prevalence of harassment on college campuses.
What is Tap ‘n Go?
Users will download the Tap ‘n Go application on their mobile device. Each user will register online with their ERNIE account and link an active mobile phone number. Once the account is set-up, the only other requirement will be Wi-Fi or mobile data connectivity while using the application.
How does it work?
A student has been working on an assignment in the Student Center until 3AM and now wants to walk back to her dorm. Before she exits the Student Center, she checks in on the application and enters her origin and destination. She has an option of adding an Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA). If she does not feed an ETA, the application will use 20 minutes as a default for any journey across campus. Once she checks-in, she can begin her journey.
This application will be administered by a human monitor working under Campus Safety. Every time a student checks in, the administrator at the Campus Safety office will be notified of the route and time.
Once she reaches her destination, she can check-out, which will notify the monitor that the student has arrived safely. In case she forgets to check-out through the application, the application will automatically send her an alert to check-out. The student will have the option to either extend her ETA or check out then. If she opts for none of the above options, she will receive an automated call after 10 minutes through which she can check out. If she doesn’t respond to any of the alerts, the administrator will be alerted that the student has not checked out. The administrator will now have the option of calling the student and sending out a search team.
While other similar applications exist, most link users to the local police station. Campus Safety would be able to respond much more quickly in the case of an emergency since they are already located on and familiar with the campus.
While checking-out, students will also have the option to add any sort of feedback or complaint regarding any activity on campus.
Advantages
- Highly cost effective.
- Lack of human interaction evades hesitation and increases convenience.
- Timely reporting of suspicious activities, harassment, and assaults.
- Develops a direct communication service between the students and Campus Safety.
