Abstract

The first objective of this research is to continue our current efforts and develop additional simulation models to analyze the potential positive and negative impacts of launch and re-entry activities on NAS stakeholder operations, particularly those of airlines. The second objective is to work on finding solutions that are generalizable across the NAS, irrespective of spaceport location. Previous research focused on Cecil Air and Space Port. This research effort examines airline impacts due to Falcon 9 launch within the past year and shuttle landings at Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Fl.

Using NASA FACET simulation software, we develop the baseline model using historical records (NOTAMs, etc.) based on previous launch and landings and airspace traffic provided by NASA for March 30, 2016, a non-launch date. Scenarios are being developed, and simulations run, varying airspace closure conditions based on input from literature reviews, the FAA, and NASA, as necessary to ensure applicability.

Did this research project receive funding support (Spark, SURF, Research Abroad, Student Internal Grants, Collaborative, Climbing, or Ignite Grants) from the Office of Undergraduate Research?

Yes, Spark Grant
