Abstract

Railways are a huge part of American industry and the transportation of goods. Rail lines date back to the industrial revolution and started off with steam engines. Now, trains are run by diesel-electric engines. Diesel-electric engines cause harm to the environment through emissions and with the current climate crisis we need to lower emissions. So, what are the alternatives to diesel-electric engines? This presentation will go over some of the ways that railways around the country are becoming more sustainable. One of these ways is how carbon emissions are reduced because of the transportation of vehicles including cars, trucks, and construction equipment works similarly to carpooling. This presentation will also explore how many railways are changing over to electric engines compared to the older diesel-electric engines. This is mostly because of the near instantaneous torque you can get out of an electric engine compared to a diesel engine. I hope that this information helps lead humanity to a better and more green future.
