His work to integrate powered-lift into the commercial aviation ecosystem includes work to define pilot qualification systems, rules for flight operations, airspace integration, airworthiness certification, and heliport infrastructure permitting and evaluation. He has published with his teammates on topics including maintenance, airspace procedure design, community noise, outwash safety, and fire risk.
Before Joby, Ryan worked on Uber Elevate. He began his career as an aircraft mechanic, and later studied aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech. He also holds a degree in economics from Binghamton University.
