Listening Lab

Listening Lab

Listening is a form of power.

We can affect the way others feel by listening – or dismissing what they say.

The ERAU Listening Lab, a joint venture of students, faculty, and staff, seeks to help students improve their listening habits in four interrelated dimensions:

  • Listening in class (listening in professional settings)
  • Listening in conversations (interpersonal listening)
  • Listening for one’s own voice (cultivating self-awareness)
  • Listening spiritually (listening for what the universe is telling you)

We combine the “science of sound” (such as neurology and the sociology of classrooms) with “the art of listening” (including practical exercises).

We are also exploring social media, AI chatbots, and other technological developments affecting attention spans as well as the difficulty of listening across political divides.

We consider the development of self-awareness to be a critical component of improving listening.

We are grateful for a Bridging the Gap grant from Interfaith America which helped us recognize the need for improved student listening. As per that original grant request, we continue to believe that the distinctive culture of the aviation and aerospace sectors does encourage bridging gaps between people.
