The Listening Lab engages students, staff, and faculty for developing useful resources for the science of sound and the art of listening.

As a STEM university, we need to understand the science behind the art.

For example:

We can understand words spoken up to 400 words per minute. However, we typically speak around 150 words a minute. This means that our brains have excess processing power. A thoughtful, well-prepared person practicing the art of listening can use these extra mental resources to assess the body language of the speaker. Alternatively, we might also notice that our brains often find something else to think about – so we easily get distracted. The need to find something for this extra mental capacity to do is the science behind fidget spinners, doodling, knitting, and other repetitive activities that can enhance listening.
