What It Is: Night Flight is an Online Literary Journal that showcases the best in original fiction and non-fiction writing, poetry, artwork, photography, and videos submitted by Embry-Riddle Worldwide students and staff.
What It Is Not: It is not a blog or a printed publication – although some form of either medium may evolve from the initial Night Flight Online Literary Journal site.
How It Works: Each edition of the journal will begin with a call for submission, along with instructions and deadlines. Submissions can be about any topic, taken from any perspective, and can include poetry, fiction or non-fiction stories, art works, photos or videos. Once submissions are compiled, an editorial team led by creative writing professor Courtney McQueen will choose the winners to be featured in the next Night Flight journal. They'll also notify everyone who submitted, including those who were not selected to be included in that particular edition. The curated submissions will be featured on the Night Flight site for several months and then replaced with the next round of winning submissions.
When Do Submissions Start?: Rolling submissions - Submit Content. Any work selected or rejected will receive an email.
What Can Be Submitted?: Pretty much anything that tells a story that's important to you. Night Flight is designed to be a creative outlet, a platform for people to share experiences and insights. At Night Flight, we believe everyone has a story to tell and the talent to tell it. Have you always wanted to try writing a science fiction story? Go for it. Have a poignant personal experience you've always wanted to share? Send it in! Don't be afraid to tell your tale and don't underestimate the power of storytelling to educate, to unite, and to change lives!
What If I Can't Write?: If the idea of trying to "write" something is keeping anyone from sharing a story, remember it's not the only medium available on Night Flight! You can take a photo or series of photos or create a video or a vlog to express yourself. And, when it comes to actually writing, don't sell yourself short. You may have more talent than you think! The key thing about the stories on Night Flight – no matter how they are told -- is that they are heartfelt and authentic.
What's Not Allowed: Pornography or graphic sexual content won't be considered. Explicit language in the context of larger stories is ok, so long as it's not gratuitous.
Story Subjects: The topics are wide open. Maybe it's someone talking about their military service and discussing the difficulties of dealing with deployment, or maybe it's a single parent vlogging about trying to better their life by earning Embry-Riddle degree, or perhaps it's an instructor who wants to let others know about an amazing student or colleague they're working with. Whatever the story, Night Flight is the perfect outlet for sharing it and, in many cases, it can help turn a negative or difficult experience into a positive lesson for others.
Bottom Line: Night Flight is aimed at opening the door for expression. The students and staff at Embry-Riddle Worldwide are remarkable, and each has stories worth sharing. Night Flight is a creative platform that will inform, entertain, and inspire.
