Abstract

The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University EagleSat communications system will be used to establish a communication link over the amateur radio frequencies between the student-built CubeSat satellite and the amateur radio satellite ground station on the Embry-Riddle campus. The design process for the EagleSat communications system included research into similar communications systems created for other CubeSat satellites and into the hardware and software necessary to fulfill the functional requirements placed upon the communication system. The appropriate hardware and software has been determined to confirm the design of the communications system. Current progress includes the prototyping of the onboard communications system using a breadboard and the continuation of the calculations necessary to establish a link budget. Further development will include testing from both the established ground station and from data collected during high altitude balloon flights. Communications system completion will occur in time to support a possible Fall 2015 EagleSat launch.
