Abstract
”Aggressive and hard-charging women violate unwritten rules about acceptable social conduct.” (Sheryl Sandberg, Lean In, 2013)
After informally surveying female students on campus, it is apparent that our negative experiences with the faculty and other students have been mirrored by other women.
We could no longer ignore the problem apparent in the campus culture surrounding women leaders. Male ambition is expected, whereas female ambition is discouraged – because it is intimidating. This project begins to address the constraints on women in leadership roles. During our research, we focused on how women are constrained in leadership positions, people’s perception of women within leadership, and how it affects women ubiquitously. We are working to create recommended courses of action that can be implemented by Embry Riddle Aeronautical University’s (ERAU) Women’s Ambassador Program. We plan to continue developing solutions to this problem to create a culture change on our campus and greater understanding of the positive impacts of gender equity. We believe these findings can create a proactive transformative environment for students at ERAU.
