John Kalinauskas Reflects on His 9/11 Experience as a Flight Instructor
Document Type
Personal Reflection
What were you doing on 9/11? (Or, What was your interviewee doing on 9/11?)
I had my CFII ride that day. My check instructor told me what was going on. I did the oral, but it was 2 weeks before I got the flight in. It was really disturbing having the skies over DAB and my home without aircraft overhead. We had a level D 737 sim on campus then and the media assumed we taught them. It was chaos for a bit.
How did 9/11 affect you personally and or professionally?
After 3 years as a flight instructor, my wife got frustrated and made me leave aviation. We ended up going separate ways, but I never returned to the airplane.
On 9/11, what sector were you (OR your interviewee) in?
Pilot, Non-military
