Presentation Description/Abstract
One of the most impactful ways to advance sustainability is through action by local governments. However, many municipalities do not have the capacity to tackle these projects on their own. The New England Municipal Sustainability Network (NEMS Network) is a community of sustainability professionals from municipalities throughout New England, in partnership with the University of New Hampshire Sustainability Institute (UNHSI). One of the Network’s newly formed Strategic Initiatives is to expand their involvement with academic institutions. Developing innovative research projects directly with students will help to increase the capacity of municipalities in their sustainability efforts, while also providing students with hands-on, meaningful experiences that will have a direct impact in their communities.
Presenter Biography
Emily Mello is a graduate student in the Natural Resources & Environmental Sciences PhD program at the University of New Hampshire (UNH). She received her B.S. in Space Physics from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in 2012, and her M.S. in Physics from UNH in 2020. She has had two fellowships with the UNH Sustainability Institute. During the 2020-2021 academic year, she worked with the town of Durham, NH to conduct a community-wide greenhouse gas inventory. Emily is currently working with the New England Municipal Sustainability Network studying regional climate action.
