Presentation Description/Abstract

While essential to both the global economy and society, the aviation industry creates 13.9% of emissions from transportation and is the second largest industrial contributor to carbon emissions after the automotive industry [1]. The following presentation proposes the emergence of electric jet engines as a potential solution to reduce the aviation industry's carbon footprint. Multiple companies and universities alike researching different methods to only utilize electricity to create thrust such as the means of fully ionizing the air that goes into the engine and turning it into expansive plasma. One study in particular, at the University of Wuhan, built a proof-of-concept electric engine model that can compete with the pressure force output of a conventional turbine jet engine [2]. The results suggest that an electric jet engine is not only applicable but also practical as the model was able to produce jet pressures and forces similar to commercial jet engines today. By implementing electric jet engines, the carbon footprint of the aviation industry would reduce significantly while also reducing the cost of flights as the cost of fuel for flights is suddenly taken out of the picture. The change from fossil fuel to electric engines would positively impact the environment by reducing the amount of pollution that would be dumped into the atmosphere.
