Presentation Description/Abstract

Traditional hydroelectric power has many upsides; it offers a renewable source of energy, creates reservoirs for water to be stored, and even can be used as a form of flood control. However, these large damns also come at great cost, and even great harm to the environment. They are extremely expensive to construct and maintain, and their failure can present devastating consequences to local environments. In stark contrast to this, vortex turbines present a small, cost effective, and safe alternative to traditional hydroelectric power sources. Their use can be varied depending on situations, presenting a flexible and cheap energy solution for many developing nations. This study found that these generators have seen use in areas such as Colombia, South Africa and the Philippines, and that their implementation has been highly effective. Generating as much as 150 kW dependent on conditions, these generators possess the capability to power households and businesses on a large scale with little overhead cost. Moving forward, energy producers, and even private citizens, may consider the implementation of these systems as a substitute for traditional hydroelectric power, or other power sources. A cost effective, small, and reliable power source is what the future will demand in terms of sustainability. To this extent, vortex turbines are a highly attractive solution.
