View the agenda Session 6 - Operational Management

Synopsis

This project will discuss the economic and environmental concerns pertaining to supersonic transport (SST), as well as the possibility for sustainable supersonic commercial flights in the future. The paper will first review the history of aviation technology and how it advanced over the years through military and civil efforts until supersonic commercial flights were made possible. The project will then address the issues and challenges faced during the operations of supersonic commercial transport that are affecting the world economically and environmentally. Economic concerns such as fuel usage, ticket prices, and operating costs presents themselves as a significant barrier for supersonic commercial transportation to be feasible. Environmental issues such as noise pollution and air pollution will be related to the damage produced by the first supersonic commercial aircraft, the Concorde. Case studies and research articles in the past that are related to these challenges would be also be brought up identify the possible causes that have hindered technology advancements in the past and can be nullified in the future. Analytical discussion will consider the trends and progress of the economy, technology and environments in civil aviation over time. Findings and recommendations will be introduced for the economic, environmental and regulatory issues that are addressed in order for potential solutions to be implemented for sustainable supersonic commercial transportation.
