Synopsis
For decades, global business travel has proven its resilience to major shocks, whether from the 9/11 attacks to the 2008 global financial crisis.
However, restarting operations after the shutdown by the COVID-19 pandemic represents a challenge of an entirely different magnitude. It involves moving from risk “avoidance” to risk “management”. The decision entails accepting some level of risk and implementing steps to minimise the impact on personnel, operations, and the community.
For this purpose, ICAO created the Council Aviation Recovery Taskforce (CART), which provides practical guidance to government and industry operators to restart the international air transport sector and recover from the impacts of COVID-19. Consistent, easily recognisable standards will serve to boost traveller confidence.
This paper will discuss our experiences in bringing these guidelines to life within the context of Singapore Airlines and provide a path forward for carriers worldwide to resume operations safely and efficiently.
