Abstract

To combat the physical difficulties of storing PCM in a purposeful way, this experiment seeks to test the efficacy of micro-encapsulated paraffin wax based PCM in silicone rubber, a versatile material commonly used in bakeware, apparel, and medical devices. The experiment is built on the founding idea that the PCM will retain its thermal properties within the silicone rubber (acting here as a matrix within which the PCM will be stored). Ideally, the silicone rubber will also maintain its original mechanical properties (e.g. tensile strength, flexibility, etc.).

Thus far, the project has consisted of testing varying masses of PCM with a set mass of SR and allowing the sample to cure. Results show that a mass percentage above 13% PCM yields a partially cured putty with no ability to hold a set form. Samples having
