Abstract
This article draws upon the findings of narrative analysis conducted during visits to museums in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to understand the role of slave laborers in official Emirati history. By demonstrating how the state’s narrative of history excludes the harsh reality of slavery in the pre-oil era, it provides insights into the politics of exclusion in state-sponsored histories in the Gulf. The article concludes by providing recommendations on ways to revise the representation of the history of the pre-oil era to provide a truthful, balanced record, address past injustices, and work toward a more inclusive and authentically progressive future.
