Abstract

In the current world, effective energy storage is an essential technology to allow life to continue moving. With the ever-evolving energy markets and climate change mitigation efforts, research into new trends and future advancements in energy storage is an increasingly important topic. This research into current literature was conducted to investigate the current different types of energy storage systems available and the current advancements being researched within energy storage systems. To begin this research, how the current energy systems function, their key characteristics, and the performance metrics used to evaluate them were found. Next, other key important influencing factors such as energy density, efficiency, cycle life, and cost, were all researched for how the different types of energy systems are selected for specific applications. Furthermore, an investigation into the environmental impacts associated with different energy storage technologies and how some contribute to the integration of renewable energy sources currently was conducted.

Did this research project receive funding support (Spark, SURF, Research Abroad, Student Internal Grants, Collaborative, Climbing, or Ignite Grants) from the Office of Undergraduate Research?
