Abstract
Ukraine in 1919-1920 was the site of multiple civil wars, or what could be called a "color war" among the Reds (Bolsheviks), Whites (anti-Bolsheviks), Greens (peasants), Blacks (Anarchists), and the newly independent state of Poland with its own expansionist policies. The Jews in Ukraine, one of the largest concentrations in the world at the time, were caught in the middle of a grizzely struggle and the grassroots Jewish self-defense network was no match for the professional national armies.
