We use the phrase “listening spiritually” to describe a range of phenomena that all involve “big picture” listening.
For some, this means listening for what God might be saying.
Others speak informally of “what the universe is telling them.”
Listening spiritually involves such reflections on where we belong in the world, what we should be doing.
We read a sad news story, and we feel a tug on our hearts. Then, we hear ourselves thinking, “I should get involved!”
Such are the moments of spiritual listening.
Listening always involves the particular biographies of the listener, and this is especially true of spiritual listening.
Some of these resources are written from an explicitly religious perspective.
As we have learned from our Center for Faith and Spirituality at ERAU, we don’t have to follow a religious tradition in order to learn from it.
Indeed, so often the person or group that we know the least about has the most to teach us – if we dare to listen.
