Abstract
The Magnetospheric Multiscale mission (MMS) has driven an unprecedented advance in our understanding of magnetic reconnection. This advance has been enabled by the unique integration of space observations of heretofore unseen precision and resolution, with modern numerical modeling and theory. Through this combination, we have a very good understanding of the very inner workings of the reconnection process, the role turbulent processes play in magnetic reconnection, and how magnetic reconnection operates differently in symmetric and asymmetric systems. This knowledge is being expanded continuously, with recent advances predicting quite accurately the reconnection rate. This presentation will provide an overview of present knowledge, and it will discuss applications and open questions in wait for further MMS-based investigations.
