Presentation Description/Abstract
The United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established in 2015, have been endorsed by nations, academia, and the public and private sectors alike with unprecedented adherence. These common global goals are designed to address various social, economic, environmental, and governance challenges to achieve a more sustainable and equitable future by 2030.
While the framework of the 2030 Agenda allows for institutions to establish their own priorities and means to achieve the goals, it also has an overarching target of "leaving no one behind." In that sense, localizing the SDGs to achieve global, national, and subnational sustainable objectives requires defining, implementing, and monitoring strategies at the local level. The full implementation of the SDGs includes tailoring these global goals to the specific needs and circumstances of local communities and sectors, ensuring that the plans are relevant and attainable at the grassroots level.
Aviation is on the way to recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, pushing the demands for effectively trained personnel even further. Boeing states that “long-term demand for newly qualified aviation personnel remains strong, as 649,000 new pilots, 690,000 new maintenance technicians, and 938,000 new cabin crew members will be needed to fly and maintain the global commercial fleet over the next 20 years.”
Aviation training plays a pivotal role in developing the necessary competencies and shaping the industry's future while addressing the challenges posed by sustainable development. This study analyzes the aviation training sector’s synergies and tradeoffs, as well as its interconnectedness, with the SDGs, and proposes strategies to support their achievement by 2030.
