Abstract

This research will explore the multiple dimensions of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and their impact on civilians living in conflict zones. Current data gathered on the impact of UAS addresses their physical nature but not the psychological power they wield. UAS have been argued as one of the most humane weapons of warfare, but the same literature does not acknowledge their inherent asymmetry. Notably, ‘drone’ refers to both weaponized and unweaponized unmanned aerial vehicles whose tasks range from targeted killings to delivering medical supplies to taking photographs. The inability of civilians to distinguish between military and humanitarian drones suggests a different dimension of influence. My findings will suggest that there is vital information to be gathered on the psychological aspect of drone use, beginning with the exploration of where conflict zones, drone use, and reported drone data overlap.
