Proposal Synopsis

Transformative learning theory frames the learning experience as a process of transformation. The learning process opens with a disorientating dilemma, in which students encounter new ideas at odds with prior knowledge. As students engage with new information, they move through phases outlined by the theory in which they grapple with integrating this new information into their knowledge. Transformative learning theory can provide a useful lens for information literacy instruction, as it offers insight into what students may experience as they encounter new concepts and work to incorporate new ideas into their understanding.

In this workshop, the presenters provide an overview of transformative learning theory and utilize examples from their own instructional experience to highlight how the theory can be applied to information literacy instruction. Attendees are guided through the phases of transformative learning theory and asked to how consider their own information literacy programs and instructional experiences. The presenters engage attendees with activities and reflection time to allow attendees to take part and contemplate how their experiences fit within the theory’s framework. Attendees also explore how they can think about the phases of transformative learning theory to gain new insights into students’ learning experience and acknowledge that learning is not necessarily linear and learners may pause or even step back as they grapple with new information. Attendees are encouraged to think of ways they could apply the concepts of transformative learning theory to their own instructional approach to improve the student experience. The presenters offer ideas for coaching learners, but emphasize the individual nature of student learning and the value of instructors understanding how students are processing information.
