Proposal Synopsis
To contribute to retention of doctoral students, Northcentral University librarians partnered with the School of Education to identify students enrolled in their dissertation sequence courses (DIS9901 – DIS9904) who were vulnerable to dismissal. Students were invited to participate in a targeted intervention program to develop the research skills needed to successfully complete their currently enrolled course sequence and advance to the next milestone. The program consisted of three one-on-one, virtual meetings with a reference librarian—an initial discussion to review challenges and goals, followed by two research consultations during which search strategies and resources were demonstrated. Librarians communicated with doctoral faculty throughout the process. Early data analysis shows that of the five students who completed the library intervention program and completed the course sequence, four of them passed and moved to the next milestone. Four students who completed the intervention program are still working through their final course in the sequence. Of the five students that did not complete the intervention but have completed the course sequence, only one of them passed and moved to the next milestone. While the total number of program participants was low, results indicate that students have a higher likelihood of advancing on the doctoral path with the provision of library research consultations. Future efforts could include expanding the number of participants within the School of Education or opening the program to other Schools within the University. In conclusion, this study has important lessons/implications as it relates to intervention, student retention, faculty collaboration, library impact, and personalization of library services.
