The Virtual Search Process
Session Format
Virtual Panel
Proposal Synopsis
Conducting online searches present challenges when hiring for in-person work. Interviews for academic library positions have traditionally relied on in-person interviews to learn about a candidate’s ability to interact with others, gain context about the library space during the interview, demonstrate instruction or presentation skill, and importantly allow candidates a chance to determine whether the campus is a fit for them personally. This panel draws on the experience of a library director and two department chairs from different institutions to talk about various ways they’ve handled searches and present a range of partially to fully virtual searches. They will discuss challenges, opportunities, and projections about the hiring process in libraries. Attendees will have an opportunity to hear lessons learned, potential advantages of the online search, advice for using online tools, and ask questions of the panelists.
