Language

  • All submissions must be in English.
  • Foreign words and phrases should be avoided. If necessary, foreign words should be set in italics rather than underlined or in bold.

Format

  • Begin the document with the title and abstract, followed by the introduction. (The title and abstract will also be entered into the system by the author as part of the online submission.
  • Text should be 12-point type, double-spaced, single column, and all page margins should be 1-inch, including any tables, figures, and objects/images.
  • Do not include page numbers or headers/footers. (These will be added by the system.)
  • The use of footnotes should be avoided. If footnotes are required, the text should be in Times New Roman 10 pt., numbered consecutively using superscript for the numerals, and placed at the bottom of the page where it is referenced. Do not use symbols to identify footnotes.
  • When proofing your document, pay attention to the rendering of any numerical equations, especially symbols and notations drawn from other than standard fonts.
  • The manuscript should be free of errors (e.g., spelling, grammar, APA style).
  • Submit your manuscript, including tables, figures, appendices, etc., as a single Microsoft Word file. (The system will convert your document to a PDF.)

Page Length

  • The JAAER welcomes submissions of approximately 7,500 words or 25 double-spaced pages (excluding references and supplemental content – i.e., appendices, etc.).

Citations & References

  • The JAAER uses the American Psychological Association’s (2020) Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition) (https://doi.org/10.1037/0000165-000).
  • In-text citations and sources in the reference list MUST be static text and not automatically generated.
  • We support the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) system. A DOI is a unique identifier associated with basic metadata where a URL pointer provides a permanent link to the internet location. Information regarding DOIs is available by visiting doi.org. Upload your References page to www.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery/ to find DOIs.

Tables, Figures, & Images

  • Keep titles as short and concise as possible.
  • Remove titles and captions in tables/figures/images' pixel area; use a new line outside.
  • Remove border lines around images.
  • Minimize use of long cross-page and/or cross-column tables and figures.
  • Consider starting a new separate figure when cross-page and/or cross-column tables and figures occur.
  • Limit the number of cross-column figures and tables based on the total page count. The maximum should be two fewer than the total number of pages. For example, a 10-page paper should have fewer than 8 cross-column figures and tables.
  • Keep in-text referenced tables/figures/image as close as possible to where referenced (i.e., insert at end of mentioned paragraph).
  • Keep tables within 3-5 columns width when possible.
  • Use high-resolution or vectorized image files for best readability.
  • Label X and Y axis titles in figures.
  • Ensure text illustrations/captions in figures are readable when rendered in half-width (single column) format.
  • Take advantage of the use of color in figures and maps (etc.). Avoid colors if their translation to black and white would render the material illegible or incomprehensible.
  • Save images in separate files to submit if paper is accepted for publication.
